Learn about the times surrounding the American Revolution
This is another book I picked up while traveling in Boston as we visited many historical sites. I was really into learning more about our nation’s history and saw this book about the American Revolution. In my mind, the book is a cross between a textbook and a fictional story. This book teaches about the American Revolution, but it does that through the eyes of two fictional characters, David and Rebecca. If You Lived in the Times of the American Revolution by Kay Moore is an engaging and informative historical fiction book that gives kids a glimpse of what caused the conflict and the circumstances surrounding the revolution. Since this is definitely a book focused on education, through the characters’ eyes, kids can learn about the causes of the conflict, the importance of the Declaration of Independence, and get an insight into the lives of America’s Founding Fathers. I would recommend this book for kids 8-12. The book helps kids learn about the American Revolution through the inclusion of historical figures, photographs, and maps. Additionally, the book encourages and develops critical thinking skills, as the characters must use their wits to survive the harsh conditions of the period. Overall, I would give If You Lived in the Times of the American Revolution a 4 out of 5. I bought this in a bookstore and it might be a little harder to find.
