SHOUT
Book Title: SHOUT
Book Description: Bestselling author Laurie Halse Anderson is known for the unflinching way she writes about, and advocates for, survivors of sexual assault. Now, inspired by her fans and enraged by how little in our culture has changed since her groundbreaking novel Speak was first published twenty years ago, she has written a poetry memoir that is as vulnerable as it is rallying, as timely as it is timeless. In free verse, Anderson shares reflections, rants, and calls to action woven between deeply personal stories from her life that she's never written about before. Described as "powerful," "captivating," and "essential" in the nine starred reviews it's received, this must-read memoir is being hailed as one of 2019's best books for teens and adults. A denouncement of our society's failures and a love letter to all the people with the courage to say #MeToo and #TimesUp, whether aloud, online, or only in their own hearts, SHOUT speaks truth to power in a loud, clear voice-- and once you hear it, it is impossible to ignore.

Gut-punching memoir in verse...raw, truthful and evocative
Shout is an incredibly powerful and insightful book by Laurie Halse Anderson. This contemporary young adult book tells an often underrepresented story of recovering from trauma that will likely leave all readers inspired. Not only does Anderson outline a powerful message about healing, but she does it in a way that is engrossing – so much so that there were points where I gasped out loud. The story follows a high school student in her senior year. Her childhood trauma is beginning to affect her ability to function in school and life in general and the reader is brought along on the journey of her recovery process. The topics of what happens to the character are often difficult to read, but you cannot turn away. Through the use of powerful poetry, Anderson reveals the truth of the character’s inner struggles in a way that is both honest and beautiful. The emotions that the book conveys are incredibly real and often painful, but also ultimately inspiring as the protagonist finds strength and hope in the midst of her recovery process. Shout is an incredible book that I would highly recommend for readers 14+. The powerful message of resilience is the shout I felt at the end of the book. I would give this book a 5/5 rating for its honest portrayal of a difficult topic and for its masterful use of language that leaves an unforgettable impact.
