Must Read!!!!!!
Stargirl is one of my all-time favorite books from my childhood. It is a magical and inspiring story about an unusual teenager who is brave enough to dare to be different and discover who she truly is. This is a must-read in my opinion, but especially a critical story for kids who may need encouragement to lean into their interests and develop their own voice and perspectives even if those differ from others around them. Following the story of Stargirl Caraway, the reader is encouraged to explore Stargirl’s uniqueness as she navigates the often-complicated path of high school life. Despite her unique personality and individualism, Stargirl manages to captivate the entire student body of her high school, as she slowly changes their lives. The story is filled with sparkles of magic and sprinkled with valuable lessons about kindness, courage, and compassion. I would say this book is appropriate for readers 8 and up. The writing is beautiful –it is poetically eloquent and the writing speaks to the emotions of adolescents struggling to fit in and understand their identity. The themes in this book revolve around self-acceptance and that it isn’t always easy to show others your true self. The story has lighthearted elements and I think appeals to a variety of readers, making it a great read for all kids. I used to talk about this book all the time and have read and re-read it at least 10 times. Overall, Stargirl is a fun and inspirational book that encourages readers to be true to themselves and to embrace their uniqueness. Highly recommended. 5 out of 5.
