With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement. Story / Interest
A Masterpiece and should be required reading for older kids
This book is eloquently written and has such a beautifully haunting story. Written with Death as our narrator, The Book Thief is full of memorable characters and contains an original storyline. I remember reading this book thinking it maybe shouldn’t be marketed as YA due to some of the themes and content, but I do think it is important reading for older teens. This book grabs your emotions and keeps you deeply vested in the characters. A must-read!
