Book Description: Having spent twenty-seven years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. Heartwarming and endearing!
The One and Only Ivan by K.A. Applegate is a heartwarming modern classic that I read because it was given to my sibling. I am really glad I read it. The book tells the story of a silverback gorilla, Ivan, who lives in a mall with Stella the elephant, and Bob the dog. Having endured years of captivity, Ivan slowly learns to trust humans and eventually overcomes his fears in order to save the animals he loves. The book is told from Ivan’s perspective, and it is a heartwarming story. I think this book is suitable for all ages, even adults, as its complex themes of compassion, loyalty, and caring for others, regardless of species, teach valuable lessons about friendship and courage. The One and Only Ivan is an empowering novel full of adventure and an unforgettable cast of characters. The characters are memorable and lovable. This book is perfect for ages 8 and up, but really everyone should read this if they have time.
