The Time of Green Magic
Book Title: The Time of Green Magic
Book Description: When Abi’s father marries Max and Louis’s mom, their families start over together. Abi suddenly finds herself the middle child, expected to share far too much—especially with grubby little Louis. Then they move into an eerie, ivy-covered house, big enough for all of them. But for the children, strange things start to happen in that house. Abi reads alone, and finds herself tumbling so deep into books, they almost seem real. Louis summons comfort from outdoors, and a startling guest arrives—is it a cat or something else? Max loses his best friend…and falls in love. Meanwhile, Louis’s secret visitor is becoming much too real. Now Abi, Max, and Louis must uncover the secrets of their new home—for there can be danger in even the most beautiful magic.

Story / Interest
Good character development about blended families and has a touch of magic!
The Time of Green Magic does a wonderful job of creating a sense of realism, making readers feel as if they’re living in the world that created in the book. The plot is fast-paced and the adventure is captivating as Edie and her new friends explore color-changing forests, cloud mountains, castles, and jungles in search of answers. In addition, the book seamlessly weaves themes of friendship, trust, and loyalty into the story, as Edie learns to rely on her new friends in order to overcome the obstacles they face. I do like how the author developed the step-sibling relationships and also the way the author depicted the dad’s efforts to manage demanding job responsibilities while parenting three children on his own since his wife is away. I expected more magical-fantasy aspects to the book, especially given the title. I think this story is more for younger readers who are in elementary school.
