Wolf Hollow

Book Title: Wolf Hollow

Book Description: Despite growing up in the shadows cast by two world wars, Annabelle has lived a mostly quiet, steady life in her small Pennsylvania town. Until the day new student Betty Glengarry walks into her class. Betty quickly reveals herself to be cruel and manipulative, and though her bullying seems isolated at first, it quickly escalates. Toby, a reclusive World War I veteran, soon becomes the target of Betty’s attacks. While others see Toby’s strangeness, Annabelle knows only kindness. And as tensions mount in their small community, Annabelle must find the courage to stand as a lone voice for justice. The brilliantly crafted debut of Newbery Honor– and Scott O'Dell Award–winning author Lauren Wolk (Beyond the Bright Sea, Echo Mountain), Wolf Hollow is a haunting tale of America at a crossroads and a time when one girl’s resilience, strength, and compassion help to illuminate the darkest corners of history.

Grippingly told...and a bit dark in places, but overall a good book.

Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk is an absorbing historical fiction novel. I read it when I was 11 and I think most middle school kids would enjoy this story. The book follows Annabelle, a smart and thoughtful twelve-year-old living in rural Pennsylvania during World War II. Annabelle’s serene life is disrupted when a bully from town begins tormenting her and her family. Circumstances quickly take a dangerous turn and Annabelle must rely on her wit and courage to survive. The story moves along a comfortable pace, and the story is compelling without ever feeling rushed, but does have some twists and turns. There are parts of the story that are a bit dark and so I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone under 10 years. Parts of this book’s storyline are very emotional, and frustrating, and shred your soul. Annabelle is such a kind, sweet character that you can’t help but root for her and hope for the best. I was quickly drawn into Annabelle’s journey as she faces difficult challenges and learns valuable lessons along the way. Overall, I recommend this book.
